Dahabiya or Cruise Ship? How to Choose Your Nile Boat
Dahabiya sailboats and Nile cruise ships compared: size, pace, stops, facilities, season and price.
A cruise ship carries 60 to 80 cabins, has a pool deck and follows a fixed timetable; it is the best value. A dahabiya is a traditional two-masted sailboat with 8 to 12 cabins that moors at islands and smaller sites the ships pass. It costs more and feels like a private yacht. Both visit the main temples.
Size and atmosphere
Cruise ships are floating hotels: restaurant, bar, lounge, sun deck and pool, with evening entertainment on many ships. A dahabiya carries one small group; meals are shared on deck and evenings are quiet.
Route and stops
Both sail between Luxor and Aswan and stop at Edfu and Kom Ombo. Dahabiyas usually start at Esna, south of Luxor, and add sites the big ships skip, such as the rock tombs of El Kab and the quarries of Gebel el-Silsila, and they moor at islands for the night.
Season and price
Cruise ships sail all year, with departures every week. Most dahabiyas sail from October to April. With fewer cabins and more included, a dahabiya costs noticeably more per person.
Which one suits you
Families, first-time visitors and anyone watching the budget usually prefer a cruise ship. Couples, small groups of friends and travellers who want quiet and a slower pace tend to love the dahabiya.
